Philosophy of the Nursing Program

The Nursing Program, a component of Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Natural Sciences Department, shares the institutional philosophy of preparing high quality professionals. Graduates of the Nursing Program will not only be competent in their practice but provide human, moral, and spiritual care to the population they serve.

Guiding Principles of the Nursing Program Faculty

Nursing is a continuous, dynamic, flexible, student-centered, and social process, in which knowledge, skills, attitudes, will result in modification of conduct.

Nursing professionals must have the scientific, moral, legal, ethical, and artistic/aesthetic knowledge that is needed for professional practice.

Sister Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model is an appropriate model for providing care for individuals, families and communities during the life cycle to promote optimum functioning.

Bachelor’s degree students use critical thinking and scientific reasoning in the nursing process. Nurses with a bachelor’s degree (generalist nurses, under Law #9, which regulates the Nursing Profession in Puerto Rico), provide care in all health settings and participate in interdisciplinary health teams. They use their knowledge, skills, and attitudes in exercising leadership, communicating orally and in writing, and benefitting from the outcomes of research.

Nursing students should possess attributes to identify, discern, and practice values while providing care to individuals, families, and communities. They apply their competencies with respect for cultural diversity.

Nursing education is a life-long learning process and graduates will be motivated to continue their personal and professional growth while they participate actively in a changing and globalized society.
