The Sustainable Development Program provides interdisciplinary training and encourages the analysis of local and global problems from different perspectives. It focuses on exploring development studies from a sustainable perspective, with a systemic approach and with values ​​of solidarity, justice and peace.

Bachelor of Sustainable Development

The Bachelor's Degree in Sustainable Development is based on two important pillars: Education for sustainable development (ESD) proposed and promoted by UNESCO; and in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Under these visions, the mission of the program is to educate professionals through an interdisciplinary learning and training experience that fosters the analysis of local and global problems from different perspectives (social, economic, environmental and cultural), with special emphasis on the analysis of cities and the design of projects to improve the urban environment. To this end, the program provides opportunities for internships, volunteer hours and other extracurricular experiences to gain professional experience.

The program looks for:

  • To generate interest in those who want to be actors in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as facilitators of sustainability initiatives, in social environments, non-profit entities or in government agencies.
  • Develop skills in analyzing local and global problems related to the environment, social inequality, economic development and poverty, as well as access to culture.
  • To train students to design sustainable development projects, at local and global levels, and to analyze successful experiences of international programs aimed at strengthening the pillars of sustainable development or transforming cities from a sustainable development approach.
  • Teach tools for planning and evaluating sustainable development projects.
  • To train students with the ability to get involved in or create initiatives that promote the configuration of sustainable cities in Puerto Rico.

Projections of the profession

Data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) anticipates significant growth in this sector in Puerto Rico in the coming years.

The skills provided by the program tend to be increasingly valued by professionals who occupy managerial and decision-making positions, both in private companies and in the public sector.
