Borinquen Writing Project

The Borinquen Writing Project is part of a network of projects sponsored by the National Writing Project based at the University of California, Berkeley. It receives funding from the National Writing Project and the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Heart.

The purpose of the National Writing Project and the Borinquen Writing Project is to improve students' writing and literacy skills through professional development programs for educators. The project in the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Corazón was established in 1995 and consists of a summer institute where educational professionals meet to write and share the teaching methods they use in the classroom.

Screenwriter Training Center

The Screenwriter Training Center, attached to the Communication Department, is dedicated to the training of screenwriters.

Aimed at media professionals and students interested in developing a career in screenwriting,
Therefore, both advanced courses and basic workshops are offered to the general public.

Its activities include theoretical-practical courses, workshops and seminars with scriptwriters, writers and teachers from Puerto Rico,
Europe, Latin America and the United States with the primary purpose of participants initiating, developing or
perfect a project. The Screenwriters Training Center of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Heart has the support
from the Audiovisual Research Foundation of the Menéndez Pelayo International University in Valencia, Spain.

Community Engagement Center (CVC)

The Community Engagement Center (CVC) of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Corazón facilitates learning experiences through service. This innovative teaching method allows theory and practice to be integrated throughout the university curriculum using a teaching model that takes place in a real work setting. It allows students to learn to observe the reality of the discipline in the different fields of knowledge; to learn to observe by using theoretical frameworks that help organize what is observed, to convert it into information and knowledge for the search for solutions to the conflicts that arise in the world of work.

Center for the Development of the Insurance Industry

The Center for the Development of the Insurance Industry of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Corazón is a center for training, capacity building, research, dissemination and service in everything related to the insurance industry in Puerto Rico.

Its main goals are: to reaffirm the fundamental role that the insurance industry plays in the economy of Puerto Rico and in the rest of the world economy; to design and implement various continuing training programs for personnel working in this industry based on their needs; to systematically support the management of research and the creation of new knowledge in this important field; to guarantee a continuous flow of trained human resources to enter the various positions that regularly arise in the insurance industry; and to establish a formal link between the academic community and insurance industry professionals.

Center for Women's Business Development (CDEM)

The Center for Women's Business Development (CDEM) of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Corazón, a unique project in Puerto Rico, offers guidance, technical assistance and information to women interested in starting or developing a business. The Center promotes self-management, networking and counseling for personal and professional development.

The Women's Business Institute (WBI) is a project of the Women's Business Development Center in cooperative agreement with the Small Business Administration—Office of Women's Business Affairs (SBA/OWBO) and private partners, which offers individual and group counseling, training, and technical assistance to women business owners and those interested in developing a business.

Center for Press Freedom

The Center for Press Freedom in Puerto Rico (CLP) is a project of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Corazón and the newspaper El Nuevo Día. It was founded in 1999 with the purpose of educating students of journalism and other related disciplines, members of the academy, journalists and the rest of the Puerto Rican community about the rights and responsibilities of freedom of the press.

The Center pursues the following objectives: to serve as a research center on the responsibilities of a free press for journalism students, journalists, and scholars in other academic disciplines; to serve as a forum for education, discussion, and exchange of ideas on press freedom that are being debated in the courts and the Legislature. It has a multidisciplinary Advisory Board, whose co-chairs are the President of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Corazón and the Director of El Nuevo Día, and an Executive Director.

Institute of Tourism Research

The Tourism Research Institute of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Corazón is a research, dissemination, training and service center in everything related to the tourism industry in Puerto Rico. Its primary objective is to conduct objective and reliable studies and research aimed at contributing to the planning, development and improvement of our tourism product, as well as its marketing, taking into account the preservation of our natural resources.

Its main goals are: to promote and carry out research on the tourism industry that contributes to the economic development of the country on the basis of social justice; to improve the quality of life through the identification and dissemination of effective and efficient solutions to the challenges of the industry and that are consistent with our culture and environment; to promote cutting-edge innovations that serve the purpose of achieving competitive efficiency in the tourism industry with the contribution of all sectors of the community together with the professional, teaching and student staff of the University; to contribute to the professional development of the industry staff and of our students and graduates; to promote new employment opportunities in the tourism industry by contributing to the strength of the industry and establishing a formal link between the academic community and tourism professionals.

Institute for the Development of the Third Sector

The Institute for the Development of the Third Sector is the vehicle that manages strategic alliances that strengthen communities and provide support to non-profit organizations through the development of training, needs studies and services that result in the strengthening of their administrative operations.

Its objectives are:

  • Develop management skills in staff working in non-profit organizations.
  • Contribute to improving the internal and external communication climate of organizations.
  • Coordinate studies aimed at evaluating the organizational structure of an organization.
  • Provide workshops to members of marginalized communities so that they can reintegrate into the workforce and improve their quality of life.
  • Promote and support the practice of solidarity, the vocation of service and community spirit.
  • Institute for the Study of Violence in the Media (INESVI)

The Institute for the Study of Violence in the Media (INESVI) aims to stimulate systematic and rigorous research into the phenomenon of violence in the media, from an interdisciplinary perspective, in the Puerto Rican context. The main emphasis of its research activity is on the processes of reception and critical reading of media.

Among its most important objectives are: to answer the questions of many citizens about the role of the media, particularly television, in the social and intellectual development of young people; to contribute to the construction of useful tools that help students and the community in general to make responsible and critical use of the media; and to impact school and university curricula to incorporate the topic of media violence in the relevant areas. The goal is to develop in citizens the skills of critical appreciation of the media.
