Master in Journalism and Innovation

The Master of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Journalism and Innovation is designed to be completed in four quarters in a fully online format.

This program is aimed at people interested in journalism and technological, media and cultural innovation. It prepares students in journalistic research methods and new storytelling formats to offer users of digital platforms and audiences of traditional media relevant content with transparency and reliability.

This master's degree is distinguished by the cooperative collaboration between academia and media companies by offering students the option of completing the final degree requirement with a cooperative internship in a news outlet (in person) or by participating in a collaborative innovation project with a news outlet created from SagradoIndustry-academia cooperation also includes the participation of media speakers as guests in classes, mentoring and support through their journalistic projects.

Curriculum

The MAC with a specialty in Journalism and Innovation of Sagrado It is the only offering of its kind in Puerto Rico, as it includes in the curriculum the requirement that every student complete a journalistic internship by joining the staff of a news outlet or participate in a project to generate content from the University on an assigned topic with the mentoring of a communications professional.

Integration of professional certifications into the graduate program

The master's degree will allow you to successfully perform in leadership positions in the media, which involves managing several projects simultaneously and at different levels. Therefore, along with your master's classes, you will take the Google professional certification in Project Management through the Coursera platform. The certification consists of six asynchronous and practical courses through which you will understand the practices and skills to be successful in a project management position, and you will practice strategic communication and problem solving in professional work situations.

  • PER 603 Significance and Impact: Writing and Generating Informative Content for Multiplatforms (3 crs)

Second trimester

  • PER 605 Visualizing Information with Creativity, Ethics and Compliance (3 crs)
  • PER 607 Aesthetics and Design for Journalism in Digital Environments (3 crs)

Third trimester

  • PER 609 Investigative Journalism: Data Management and Search for Solutions (3 crs)
  • PER 612 Innovation, Leadership and Change Management in the Media (3 crs)

Fourth trimester

Duration and modality

The Journalism and Innovation master's program is designed to be completed in four quarters of study. All courses are offered in a hybrid format.

  • Total courses: 7
  • Credits per course: 3 and 6 credits, the final work
  • Total credits: 24 credits

Skills acquired

The student will develop the following skills and knowledge:

  • You will understand the local and international panorama of digital media in society
  • Critically analyze the scope and effect of the media (traditional and digital) and the impact that misinformation has on the audience (fake news and deep fakes).
  • You will have technological fluency to enter the media, functional knowledge of data journalism
  • You will know and interpret scientific and academic studies
  • Will manage crowdsourcing processes.
  • You will design and create content for multiple platforms through research, creativity and the use of emerging technologies to generate news with information that transcends the selected medium and directly impacts society.
  • You will identify current work modalities and routines (workflows) in traditional and emerging media and innovation models in both procedures and content.
  • You will measure the results of a digital campaign through data interpretation to increase return on investment.
  • You will learn about the ethical and legal aspects of data collection and publication, the integrity of the people investigated, and transparency at every step of the journalistic process.
  • You will learn theory and practice in the areas of traditional and emerging media management, as well as strategies for being a change agent and managing change management.
