Financial Assistance

Military tuition assistance (TA) is a benefit paid to eligible members of the ARMY, NAVY, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force. Congress has granted each service branch the ability to pay up to 100% of its member's tuition expenses. Each military service branch has its own eligibility criteria, service requirements, application processes, and restrictions. This money is typically paid directly to the University by the individual military agencies.

We recommend that students begin the process of requesting the TA at least one (1) month before the start date of classes for the corresponding academic session, as established in the Academic Calendar so that the TA will be applied to your account before the start of the academic session and reflected on your statement. Submitting incorrect or incomplete information may result in delays in the distribution of funds.

Deadlines for Applying for Financial Aid

Students must apply for financial aid each year and submit the application and all required documents by the following deadlines to receive financial aid notification before the first day of classes:

  • First Semester (August to December): July 15
  • Second Semester (January to May): November 15
  • Summer Sessions (June and July): April 15

To be certified as eligible members, students must submit the application and required documentation through the institutional portal. my.sagrado. EduStudent Service, Forms and Request, Registration Service Request.  Submission of this application No. Military aid is guaranteed because the branch of service determines eligibility and benefits. Failure to attend classes during the census period or unsatisfactory academic progress may result in ineligibility for military aid benefits.

Refund Policy for Unused TA Funds

Military tuition aid (TA) is awarded to students under the assumption that the student will attend the University for the entire period for which the aid is awarded. When a student using military tuition aid withdraws, he or she may no longer be eligible for the full TA funds originally awarded.

To comply with U.S. Department of Defense policy, Sagrado will return unused TA funds on a pro-rata basis up to at least 60% of the term for which the funds were awarded. TA funds will be returned to the branch of service to which the student belongs (ARMY, NAVY, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force). In cases where a student stops attending due to a military service obligation, Sagrado will work with the affected student to identify solutions that do not result in student debt to Sagrado for the returned portion.

The student's official withdrawal date is used to calculate the TA percentage earned. A student's official withdrawal date is the last date of attendance at a course or academic activity. The refund calculation is based on the formula below.

15 Weeks

Portion of the semester completed to the date of withdrawal % of TA to be returned
Week 1 100% refund
Weeks 2-3 80% refund
Weeks 4-5 70% refund

Weeks 8-9 50% refund

If you have any questions, eBenefits can guide you through the application form by calling 1-800-983-0937. Begin your application at least three months before your school start date so that VA can process your application.
  • Make sure to select the Post 9/11 GI-Bill® (Chapter 33) on your application. You may use the Montgomery GI-Bill® (Chapter 30), but it will not pay your tuition in full and you will not be eligible for Basic Assistance for Housing (BAH) from the Post 9/11 GI-Bill®.
  1. Once VA has processed your application, VA will mail you a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). (It may take four to five weeks for delivery.)

When you receive your COE, be sure to send a copy of your COE and your DD-214 to the contact person en Sagrado by email so they can create your student/VA profile and get your certified credits. (You must do this to start your VA benefits on time.)

  1. Once you finish active duty (EAS), you should immediately call the VA Department of Education, Benefits and Training at (1-888-442-4551) and ask the following questions to prepare:
  • Am I registered as a veteran in the system? (You must be registered as a veteran in the system to receive BAH.) Don't assume this happens automatically. You may need to send VA a copy of your DD-214 to confirm your eligibility.
  • Please make sure your mailing address and relevant information is up to date with VA as they periodically send important mailings.
  • Make arrangements to set up your direct deposit information in the system. You must provide VA with your personal bank routing number and account number. Otherwise, wait for a check in the mail which could further delay the receipt of your benefits.

II. When you get to Sagrado

  1. Participate in the Open House in which the program offerings are presented
  2. Request a tour from the contact person so you can familiarize yourself with the campus.
  3. Puerto Rican and federal law require that all students have their vaccinations up to date unless there is a legally permitted reason to exempt you from this requirement. You must bring a copy of your immunization certificate to the Admissions Office or you can send it by email to admissions@sagrado.edu. Make sure that the Admissions Office confirms that they have received the immunization certificate; otherwise, your registration will be cancelled, which means that you will not receive your benefit.
  4. Visit your academic advisor and register for your classes.
  5. Send an email to one of the contact persons Sagrado and notify them of the classes you are enrolled in and the number of credits you are taking each semester. In addition, you must complete the Veterans Responsibility Sheet (Responsibilities for VA Beneficiaries).
  6. The contact person of Sagrado will send you an email informing you that your credits have been certified and have been sent to VA.
  7. Be diligent and confirm with VA that they have received the certification. (Please note that it may take up to a week or more to receive the certification.)
  8. Processing these applications can take some time and may cause a delay in receiving your benefits. You should be prepared to purchase books and supplies, rent or housing deposits, and other out-of-pocket expenses until you receive your BAH. Stay in touch with your Veteran Certifying Officer to make sure all required documentation is in order.

III. Veterans Health and Medical Insurance
