Community Engagement
In order to coordinate and direct service learning activities, the Community Engagement Center was established in 1999. It facilitates community-based learning by identifying a variety of community organizations, microenterprises, agencies, and corporations with socially responsible initiatives whose needs can be addressed through the service learning courses offered at USC. It also supports the development of courses that have a community engagement component and establishes links between community organizations and courses that participate in this approach. The Community Engagement Center is now a Program within the Sofia Center in the area of social action.
More than four hundred (400) organizations have received services from the linked courses in the period from August 1998 to June 2015. In the last seven years, 3,815 students have developed 657 community service projects to benefit hundreds of non-profit entities, social microenterprises or geographic communities.
