Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology at Sagrado: Advanced Training in Laboratory Techniques, Bioinformatics and Bioprocesses

The Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology is designed for professionals who wish to acquire advanced knowledge and practical skills in applied biotechnology techniques. Students will master essential laboratory techniques, bioinformatics, and bioprocesses; understand the molecular and cellular foundations of biotechnology; and apply ethical principles in scientific and industrial contexts. Furthermore, they will strengthen their critical analysis and scientific communication skills, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and the dissemination of biotechnological knowledge. This graduate certificate includes both in-person and online learning activities.

Graduates will be able to join the pharmaceutical industry, research laboratories, and industrial biotechnology companies, or continue their studies in related fields. This program addresses the needs of the scientific sector in Puerto Rico, combining rigorous academic training with practical experience and promoting a commitment to the responsible development of innovative biotechnological solutions.

Curriculum

To complete the Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology, students take six courses. The program includes courses that integrate in-person laboratory learning at the School of Health and Sciences to strengthen skills in bioinformatics, immunology, and molecular biology.

Duration and modality

The Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology consists of 18 credits to be completed in 3 trimesters. All courses are offered remotely with synchronous interactions (hybrid-virtual format). This means that half of the academic experience is asynchronous, through content and assignments on the Canvas learning platform, and the other half is synchronous, through virtual meetings via ZOOM. Classes meet via videoconference in the evening (starting at 6:00 pm, Puerto Rico time).

During the first and second trimesters, three courses are included that require in-person attendance of up to 10 hours each, coordinated by the course instructors. All in-person visits will be scheduled for weekends (Thursday to Sunday) in the afternoon.

Admission requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology follows institutional admission requirements. In addition, applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in any science-related discipline from an accredited institution.

The Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology connects the pharmaceutical, agribusiness, food, and research sectors. From 2019 to 2023, the biotechnology sector experienced sustained employment growth of 14.3%, reaching over 42,000 jobs in more than 1,000 establishments. Specifically, the agricultural biotechnology sector has generated a direct economic impact of $284 million and created over 2,900 well-paying jobs.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that laboratory space dedicated to research and development (R&D) in this industry will increase by more than 20% in the coming years, creating new job opportunities.
