The Graduate Certificate in Science Communication, unique in Puerto Rico, addresses science communication as a fundamental strategic discipline for the advancement of society. It is designed with a central focus on communication theories and models, training professionals to design, implement, and evaluate communication strategies that connect scientific evidence with diverse audiences, especially in the areas of public policy and science diplomacy.

Students will master strategic communication, from audience analysis and narrative construction to risk communication and ethics in disclosure. They will acquire skills to translate complex data into persuasive and culturally relevant messages, both on digital and traditional platforms.

Duration and modality

The Graduate Certificate in Science Communication consists of 18 credits to be completed in 3 trimesters. All courses are offered remotely with synchronous interactions (hybrid-virtual format). This means that half of the academic experience is asynchronous, through content and assignments on the Canvas learning platform, and the other half is synchronous, through virtual meetings via Zoom. Classes meet via videoconference in the evening (starting at 6:00 pm, Puerto Rico time).

Curriculum

The curriculum integrates science and communication with the study of public policy and international relations. Graduates will be able to lead dialogue among scientists, communities, and policymakers.

To complete the Graduate Certificate in Scientific Communication, students take six courses for a total of 18 credits.

Admission requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Science Communication requires a GPA of 2.75 or higher, in addition to meeting institutional admission requirements. Furthermore, applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline related to the natural sciences or communication from an accredited institution.
